Do I Need to Hire A Web Designer?

Do I need to hire a web designer? The fact that you’re asking this question means you’re probably debating whether or not you can build your own website for your business. Running a business is exciting. Watching your dreams come to reality and being able to make a living off of it is a beyond rewarding experience. As you continue to grow though, you start having more responsibilities piled onto your plate and less time to deal with them. So before you decide that you’re going to build your own website, consider the following…

The first question you need to ask yourself is, what is my time worth? Let me put it this way, would you build your own house? You have access to the same tools and the same building materials, plus, you would save a lot of money doing it. Sounds ridiculous, right? That’s because you know that it would take you a lot longer, you would probably screw up a major piece of the build, and eventually you would need help. Even when you’re finished, it probably wouldn’t look nearly as good as if a professional had done it and you would need to pay someone to fix everything you screwed up. Web design is no different.

Your website will be the main deciding factor on whether or not customers purchase from you.

So why would you gamble with such a crucial aspect of your business? You’re going to waste more time and money doing it yourself than just hiring a web designer from the start. Yes, there are a ton of website builders out there that are relatively cheap such as Squarespace or Wix. You can also buy a premade WordPress theme and use a WordPress building tool. But just like buying a prefabricated house, there’s more to the build than meets the eye.

Web design is an art form, and you can’t outsource art.

There’s also the option to outsource your web design work. If you enjoy going back-in-forth for days over email, live chats, and phone calls every time you have an issue, then go for it. It’s also important to note that there is a huge difference between just having a website, and having a website that impresses your customers. You see the same issue a lot with “professional” photographers. There are a lot of people who own cameras, but that doesn’t mean they’re producing quality work. I’m not saying all overseas web designers are bad, just do your research.

So whether your business is just starting out or already established, hire a web designer. I know that may sound blunt, but I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t want your business to be successful. Your website should be one of the first and most important investments you make in your business. Once it’s established the rest will follow.
